Coinbase iOS App No Longer Offers NFT Transfers

Earlier this year, Apple finally started to accept the onboarding of NFT apps and games to their app store. However, the good news was short lived. Apple now does allow NFTs on iOs - but only if we play by their strict rules. Apple insists on taking a pay cut of 30% from in-app payments. If that wasn't bad enough, they also state that the NFT apps must not offer any extra functionality. So, no utility.

So Apple has come to a decentralized community with a list of demands that impact artists, collectors, and creators? The community was not pleased. Not only is it not the vibe, but also, it just doesn't work! Due to the rules, Coinbase has had to halt NFT transfers for Apple users.

On December 1st, Coinbase took to Twitter to announce a halt on their NFT transfers for Apple users. Why have they paused transfers? Because Apple is blocking the crypto exchange from releasing its latest app update. Why is it blocked? Because of their 30% purchase fee! In the Twitter thread, Coinbase stated "Appleโ€™s claim is that the gas fees required to send NFTs need to be paid through their In-App Purchase system.

So, Apple wants 30% of the gas fees. This is practically not possible due to how the blockchain (and gas fees) works.Once again, a web2 giant trying to make it in web3 without understanding how the space operates.

So, to clarify, Apple's In-App Purchase System is a clear conflict due to the fact that Coinbase could not fulfill these requirements even if it tried. To draw parallels, this would be like Apple trying to take a cut of every email sent on the internet. Virtually impossible. Apple has the world in a chokehold with phones and tech, and now they want to make gigantic profit from NFTs too. Unfortunately for those holding NFTs in an Apple wallet, it's not great news. To quote Coinbase "if you hold an NFT in a wallet on an iPhone, Apple just made it a lot harder to transfer that NFT to other wallets, or gift it to friends or family."We can only hope that Apple takes steps to fix this, but Apple has yet to respond to these comments as of the time of writing.

Geoffrey the Giraffe is back - as an NFT!

Whilst Apple may have a tight grip on our adult years, there was someone else who ruled our childhood - Geoffrey the Giraffe. Toys R Us closed stores in 2018 (its still a sore topic) but now the childhood icon and his toy-empire are back - but this time, in web3.Finally, some good news. This is the Christmas miracle we all needed.

Toys R Us, the iconic toy retailer, will release a 10,000 piece collection based on none other than Geoffrey himself. The collection releases December 9th, is on the Solana Blockchain, and will live on Magic Eden. The NFTs are priced at $100! I'm sure that I spent way more than this when shopping in-store. However, the presale has already begun, with the early bird and Anybodies sales completely sold out. But don't worry! There are still Geoffrey List spots available in their discord.

What is Geoffrey bringing to web3? Well, aside from his charming style and nostalgic vibes, the roadmap (or 'blueprint') tells us that holders can have access to new Toys R Us flagship stores, a meta-store, and even a marketplace. All my childhood pocket money went to Toys R Us, now it looks like all my adult money will too. Circle of life.
