Justin Bieber and Jimmy Fallon Among Celebrities Sued Over BAYC Endorsements
Another BAYC lawsuit is underway - and this time, it's naming celebrities.
Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, and Madonna are among many celebrities named in a class-action lawsuit against the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT founders. The lawsuit alleged that the stars āmisleadingly promotedā BAYC NFTs, resulting in buyers facing substantial financial losses.
Yikes.
To complaint went on to claim that Yuga Labs is running a āvast schemeā and paid celebrities to shill NFTs.
The lawsuit, filed by John T. Jasnoch of Scott+Scott Attorneys at Law LLP reads: The manufactured celebrity endorsements and misleading promotionsā¦were able to artificially increase the interest in and price of the BAYC NFTsā¦causing investors to purchase these losing investments at drastically inflated prices.ā
If that wasn't enough, the lawsuit then went on to say that Yuga Labs and Guy Oseary were part of a āvast schemeā using MoonPay as a āfront operationā to sell NFTs.
TL;DR: The lawsuit is saying that celebs endorse the NFTs, price rises, people buy the NFTs at inflated prices. Monkey see, Monkey do, Monkey regret.
The lawsuit named a whopping 37 defendants. This includes Yuga Labs founders and leadership team, MoonPay and its CEO, Ivan Soto-Wright, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
Web3 investor, Guy Oseary; NFT artist, Beeple; and several Ape DAO board members are also named. A-list celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Hart, Serena Williams, Steph Curry, and The Weeknd are some of the others on the list.
The lawsuit covers a lot - from Jimmy Fallon failing to disclose his investments in Moonpay when promoting BAYC and Moonpay on The Tonight Show, to Justin Bieber 'receiving' a Bored Ape which was promoted as one he bought himself.
So, is this just buyer's remorse and bear-market regret, or have BAYC and their celeb friends been pulling the fur over our eyes?
Ledger Announces Debut Browser Extension: Ledger Connect
Ledger - MVP in the NFT security world - has done it again! At Ledger Op3n in Paris, the Web3 ledg-ends (see what I did there?) announced a new hardware wallet named 'Stax'. Then, they went on to announce ANOTHER new offering - Ledger Connect, the Ledger browser extension.
I feel safe and secure just thinking about it!
Starting in early 2023, Ledger customers will be able to use their hardware wallets to connect with Web3 apps, bringing improved user experience and security for NFT holders across the metaverse. A lovely little Christmas surprise for Ledger owners!
The software has been designed specifically for use with Nano X and Stax hardware wallets, with user experience in mind. The extension connects to your Ledger device via Bluetooth. So, this means you can only use it if you have your hardware wallet with you. Whatās more, Ledger Connect runs in the background whilst you browse your favourite Web3 sites and apps. Like your own little personal security guard, watching over your NFTs.
Also, Ledger Live allows you to view your NFTs immediately and store them securely in your cold wallet too.
Owning a cold wallet has never felt so hot.
Finally, Ledger also unveiled its plans for clear signing mechanisms for smart contracts. Rather than signing a bunch of code, Ledger Connect will simplify the raw data. This will show you exactly what it is you are signing in a clear way.
No more pretending to understand code while internally screaming. Ledger has got our backs.
